Ultrasonic water meters and heat meters From the first sketch to the calibrated meter

Helvatron develops and manufactures the H2O water meter and the DELTA III heat and cooling meter in Baar, Switzerland. Both measure with ultrasound and connect to building automation and energy management via M-Bus, RS-485 (Modbus RTU), LoRa or NB-IoT.

Manufacturer, not reseller

What does ‘made in Switzerland’ mean at Helvatron?

Development, production and an accredited test field are under one roof in Baar, alongside sales, service and support. Production of the H2O and DELTA III is certified to MID module D, audited by METAS-Cert. In our own laboratory we test for UV exposure, temperature and humidity, IP68, EMC and radio, among other things.

  • Our own ultrasonic measurement technology for water and for heating and cooling energy
  • Certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001
  • New production line in 2026 with a capacity of around 350,000 meters per year

H2O in use

From installation in the pipe to the reading in the control system

The animation shows an H2O in the cold-water pipe of a plant room: installation, ultrasonic measurement, flow rate and the data path via M-Bus to the building management system.

  1. Prepare the pipeThe meter is fitted in the cold-water pipe between two shut-off valves. From DN15 to DN40, the H2O needs no straight inlet or outlet sections.
  2. Install the meterDN15 to DN40 with threaded connections, from DN50 with flanges. The arrow on the meter shows the flow direction; any installation position is permitted.
  3. Water flowsWater flows through the measuring tube of the meter to the distribution pipework in the building.
  4. Measure with ultrasoundTwo transducers alternately send pulses with and against the flow. The pulse travelling with the flow arrives sooner.
  5. Calculate flow rateThe transit time difference gives the flow velocity and hence the flow rate. The meter totalises the volume and stores hourly, daily and monthly values.
  6. Transmit dataAn M-Bus master such as the EMU M-Center reads the meter by its secondary address. Other versions transmit via RS-485 (Modbus RTU) or LoRa.
  7. Analyse in the control systemThe M-Center forwards the values via MQTT, BACnet IP, Modbus TCP or CSV to the building management and energy management systems.

DELTA III in use

How a heat meter measures energy in a heating circuit

The heat transferred is calculated from the flow rate and the flow and return temperatures. In cooling mode, the DELTA III records cooling energy in a separate register.

  1. Heating circuitThe flow pipe carries warm water to the consumer and the return pipe brings the cooled water back. The pump keeps the water circulating.
  2. Install the DELTA IIIThe flow sensor is installed in the pipe, with the calculator next to it on a DIN rail or wall. One temperature sensor is fitted in the sensor body.
  3. Two temperaturesThe second sensor measures in the other pipe. Pt500 or Pt1000, two-wire connection. The installation instructions specify which pipe is which.
  4. Flow by ultrasoundInside the sensor, ultrasonic pulses travel via metallic reflectors with and against the flow. From this, the calculator determines the volume flow rate.
  5. Temperature differenceThe calculator continuously determines the difference between flow and return temperature.
  6. Calculate energyVolume times temperature difference times heat coefficient gives the energy. Heating and cooling go into separate registers.
  7. Send valuesThe communication card passes the values on, here via RS-485 with Modbus RTU. The card can be replaced on site.
  8. In the higher-level systemThe building automation or energy management system displays power, energy and temperatures and handles billing.
Simplified illustration. Values are examples. Install the flow sensor and temperature sensors in accordance with the DELTA III installation instructions.

Communication

Which interface suits your building?

Wired where a bus already exists or can be installed, radio where meters are spread out and hard to reach. You select the interface via the part number; on the DELTA III it sits on a replaceable communication card.

Also available, depending on the product: wireless M-Bus, 4–20 mA (DELTA III, flow rate) and an optical interface for on-site configuration and reading.

Applications

Where Helvatron meters measure

Residential and commercial buildings

Water and heat metered per unit and billed on actual consumption, read via M-Bus or LoRa.

Boiler rooms and plant rooms

DELTA III on heat generators, substations and heating circuits, connected to the building automation system via Modbus RTU.

District cooling and office towers

Cooling meters in large flanged sizes, used for many years in air-conditioning plants in the Middle East.

Service connections and water distribution

H2O rated IP68, also for pits and meter boxes, with reverse-flow measurement and leak detection.

Industry and ISO 50001

Measure water, heating and cooling flows for each plant and analyse them in the energy management system.

Data centres, hospitals, airports

Chilled-water distribution and water consumption, where downtime is costly and data must be complete.
